15 years after Kārlis Skrastiņš's death, promised memorial by Riga arena still missing
It has been 15 years since Latvian hockey player Kārlis Skrastiņš died in a plane crash, but the memorial square planned near the Riga arena in his honor still has not been built, even though the commemorative sculpture is already finished.
Today, September 7, 2026, marks exactly 15 years since the plane crash that took the life of Latvian ice hockey player Kārlis Skrastiņš. The athlete died at the age of 37.
Despite the considerable time that has passed since the tragedy, a memorial square planned near the hockey arena in Riga to honor his memory has still not been created. The project promised to the public remains unfinished.
Sculpture already completed
According to available information, the sculpture intended to serve as the central element commemorating the hockey player has already been made. However, the memorial square itself, meant to surround the arena and house this sculpture, has not yet been established.
Thus, despite the promises made and the work already completed on the sculpture, there is still no dedicated public space where the memory of the outstanding hockey player can be honored.
