Two candidates share the exact same name in Latvia's parliamentary election
Latvia's 15th Saeima election ballots feature two different people with the identical name Viktors Valainis, causing confusion among voters on social media. The Central Election Commission confirms there is no error on the ballots.

Latvia held its 15th Saeima parliamentary election on October 3, with polling stations open nationwide from 8:00 to 20:00 as voters chose among 14 party lists. Amid the voting, an unusual coincidence on one ballot sparked confusion online.
A photo circulating on social media showed a ballot for the "Latvia First" party in the Zemgale constituency, with the fourth candidate circled — a man named Viktors Valainis. The person who posted the image publicly wondered whether they had missed some news, since the name is far better known as belonging to Latvia's current Minister of Economics.
Same name, two different men
According to official data from the Central Election Commission, two separate individuals bearing the identical name Viktors Valainis are indeed running in this election. The candidate pictured in the Zemgale ballot photo, running fourth on the "Latvia First" list, was born in 1943 and works as an associate professor at the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies.
The better-known Viktors Valainis, born in 1986, serves as Latvia's Minister of Economics. He is not running in Zemgale at all, but in the Riga constituency, where he holds the top spot on the list of the Union of Greens and Farmers.
Social media commenters quickly clarified the mix-up, noting that the two men are entirely unrelated and that the naming coincidence had already been discussed after candidate lists were submitted ahead of the election.
The episode serves as a reminder to voters that recognizing a candidate's name alone is not always sufficient — the party and the specific electoral constituency listed on the ballot matter too when marking a preferred candidate.
