State Police in Aizkraukle region have detained an 18-year-old motorcyclist who initiated a chase after being spotted by officers and subsequently violated several traffic regulations. The incident occurred on Tuesday, June 16, at approximately 8:20 PM.
A police patrol minibus "Volkswagen Transporter" noticed a motorcycle without a license plate on the local road P79 "Pļaviņas - Ērgļi" in Aiviekste parish. As officers approached, the driver sped away. Police activated emergency lights and sirens and began pursuit, but the youth continued fleeing through forest roads.
During the chase, the motorcyclist repeatedly ignored police orders to stop, conveyed via loudspeaker. He exceeded the speed limit—on a gravel road where the limit is 80 km/h, he drove at 134 km/h. He also crossed into oncoming traffic, failed to use turn signals, and when approaching highway A6, did not slow down but crossed it without checking for safety.
The youth turned onto a path, crossed a pedestrian bridge, and fell. As police ran toward him, he tried to lift the motorcycle to continue fleeing but was apprehended at 8:26 PM.
It was determined that the motorcycle—a cross motorcycle—was not registered, and the 18-year-old did not possess a driver's license. Seven administrative proceedings were initiated against him, including for speeding, using an unregistered vehicle, and driving without a license. The total fine amounts to 980 euros, along with a three-month driving ban.
Additionally, a criminal proceeding has been launched for aggressive driving after repeated police orders to stop. According to the Criminal Law, potential penalties include up to two years of imprisonment, probation supervision, community service, or a fine, as well as license suspension for up to five years.
