Men with business backgrounds dominate 2026 Saeima election candidate lists
A review of party candidate lists for the 2026 Saeima elections shows the most common candidate is a man with higher education and business experience, while parties differ sharply in how many veteran politicians versus newcomers they field.

As Latvia approaches the 2026 Saeima elections, attention is turning not only to party platforms but also to who exactly appears on the candidate lists. A review of most of the lists reveals a shared pattern: the typical candidate is a man with a higher education degree and experience in business or entrepreneurship. This profile recurs across the majority of party lists regardless of their political orientation.
Veterans versus newcomers
At the same time, notable differences exist between parties. Some lists are dominated by people long familiar with the corridors of ministries and municipal institutions — politicians with experience in public administration or local government. Other lists show the opposite picture, gathering political newcomers for whom this election will be their first serious electoral contest.
Young candidates kept off the top
A particularly striking pattern emerges when looking at where younger candidates are placed. Several parties do not lack young people on their lists overall, yet these candidates are almost never found near the top of the list, where the names with the best chances of winning a Saeima seat are usually placed. In other words, while parties do include young people in their lists, the real influence and chances of being elected still tend to remain with more experienced and older candidates.
Overall, despite differences between parties in the ratio of veteran politicians to newcomers, the lists continue to show a similar tendency in terms of gender and professional background — a predominance of male candidates with business experience.
