A year ago, Uldis Brokāns spent an unusually hot summer on the French Riviera, where he worked in construction. In his free time, he cycled dozens of kilometers a day along the hilly coastline. While the heat wore others down, it did not stop him from enjoying the Mediterranean scenery — he had always been healthy and resilient.

A diagnosis that changed everything

A few months after returning from his active summer in France, Uldis received a serious diagnosis: stage 4 stomach cancer with metastases. Doctors determined the tumor was inoperable. The diagnosis came as a shock, since shortly before it he had handled physical exertion with ease and had no history of health problems.

Now 44-year-old Uldis Brokāns is fighting for his life as he confronts a serious, advanced illness. His case is a reminder of how suddenly a severe diagnosis can upend a person's life, even when nothing beforehand suggested any health issues.
