When packing for a week-long trip, many people try to bring a separate outfit for every day, but a good portion of it often ends up unused. An alternative is the so-called 5-4-3-2-1 method, based on selecting a small number of clothing items that can be combined with one another.
What to pack
The method suggests bringing five tops (T-shirts, shirts, blouses or thin sweaters), four bottoms (such as jeans, trousers, skirts or shorts), three pairs of shoes for different purposes, two extra items such as a dress or a jacket, and one accessory that can change the look of an outfit. The key requirement is that everything matches in both color and style — only then can a small wardrobe produce many different outfit combinations.
Deciding what to bring
It helps to lay out all the intended clothes on a bed before packing, then set aside roughly a third of them — this is usually where "just in case" items end up, the ones that never actually get worn during the trip. Another useful check is to ask what would actually happen if a particular item were left behind.
Saving space in your bag
To save space inside the suitcase, bulkier and heavier items such as a jacket or a thick sweater are best worn during the flight rather than packed. Softer clothes can be rolled up, while underwear and socks can be tucked inside shoes. Since carry-on size and weight limits vary between airlines, it is worth checking the specific ticket conditions before heading to the airport.
