The house in Braunau am Inn, Austria, where Adolf Hitler was born, has been transformed into a police station. The Austrian government aimed to neutralize the site to deter neo-Nazi visits.
The building where Nazi leader Adolf Hitler was born has officially become a police station. Located in Braunau am Inn, near the German border, the house where Hitler was born on April 20, 1889, had long attracted neo-Nazi pilgrims from around the world.
The Austrian government expropriated the property in 2016, but a legal battle with the former owner lasted until 2019. An expert committee ruled out demolition or turning it into a museum, instead recommending a redesign that would make the building as unrecognizable as possible. That recommendation has now been carried out with the conversion into a police precinct.
Although Hitler only spent a small part of his life in this house, it became a symbolic site for his followers. The new police station, opened on Wednesday, is part of efforts to neutralize the location and prevent it from being used as a gathering point for extremists.
