Estonian basketball player Kerr Kriisa, arrested by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Sunday, faces serious charges. Attorney Martin Parind stated in an interview with Estonian public broadcaster ERR that in the worst case, the athlete could face 50–60 years in prison.
The 25-year-old point guard was detained in connection with a multi-million dollar fraud scheme. It is alleged that the criminal activity began during the 2023/2024 season, when Kriisa played for West Virginia University.
Social media reports indicate that the player may have been involved in planning and executing the fraud, accepting bribes, and participating in a criminal offense.
The lawyer also noted significant differences between the US and Estonian legal systems, which could affect the outcome of the case.
