Agate Caune sets personal best half-marathon time at World Athletics running championships

Latvian athlete Agate Caune set a new personal best in the half marathon on Sunday at the World Athletics running championships in Copenhagen. She crossed the finish line in one hour, 14 minutes and 27 seconds, improving her previous best by more than a minute and finishing in 72nd place overall.

Other Latvian athletes also took part in the event. Agata Strausa finished 89th with a time of one hour, 18 minutes and 21 seconds — more than five minutes slower than her personal best. In the men's race, Dmitrijs Serjogins placed 105th, finishing in one hour, seven minutes and one second, nearly three minutes off his own Latvian record.

Winners

In the women's field, which raced separately from the men, Kenya's Agnes Ngetich won with a new world record time of one hour, five minutes and 15 seconds. Her compatriot Veronicah Loleo finished second, 50 seconds behind, while Florence Nijonkuru of Rwanda took third, a further three seconds back, also setting a national record. A total of 105 women finished the race, with two more withdrawing.

In the men's race, Sweden's Andreas Almgren won with a new European record of 58 minutes and six seconds. Kenya's Nicholas Kipkorir crossed the line five seconds later, followed by Uganda's Joshua Cheptegei another 15 seconds behind. Overall, 121 men finished the men's race, while six others did not complete it.

Medals in the mile and 5-kilometer events were awarded the previous day. This marks the world running championships in this format, which was first held in Riga in 2023.
