Charity campaign seeks to provide school bags for Ukrainian children
A fundraising campaign "School Bags for Ukrainian Children" aims to collect enough funds to purchase 1,000 school bags with stationery for children in rural regions of Ukraine. Residents of Liepāja and the South Kurzeme region are invited to participate.
As the new school year approaches, many children in Ukraine face the reality of studying in war conditions for the fifth year. To offer support and joy, the SIXT franchise partner in Latvia, together with the Riga Jesus Congregation, is organizing a charity campaign "School Bags for Ukrainian Children." This is the fourth year of the campaign. Last year, approximately 500 bags were sent to the Cherkasy region, and the positive response has encouraged organizers to involve a broader audience this year.
The goal is to raise funds for 1,000 school bags, each valued at around 35 euros, including basic school supplies. The bags will be distributed to children in smaller rural regions in central Ukraine, an area that has experienced repeated Russian missile and drone attacks due to its strategic infrastructure.
Jānis Putniņš, head of SIXT car rental in the Baltics, noted that many Ukrainian children do not know what it means to study in peace, and this campaign can help create a festive mood before the school year. The bags are not only a symbolic gesture but also a practical necessity, as many families struggle to afford school supplies amidst the war.
Campaign organizers and volunteers plan to travel to Ukraine at the end of August to personally deliver the bags. Donations are accepted until August 18 via the website www.jezusdraudze.lv. Putniņš emphasizes that every contribution, even a few euros, is important. The campaign is organized by SIA "Transporent" in cooperation with the Riga Jesus Congregation of the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church.
