Children in Aizkraukle region collect over 1.6 tonnes of batteries
Students and preschoolers in Aizkraukle region have collected more than 1.6 tonnes of used batteries during the “Tīrai Latvijai” environmental education campaign this school year.

Children from several educational institutions in Aizkraukle region have taken part in the “Tīrai Latvijai” environmental education campaign, organised by “Zaļā josta”. Together, they collected over 1.6 tonnes of used batteries and 18 kg of small electrical appliances.
The largest amount of batteries – 558.8 kg – was collected by Aizkraukle Secondary School, followed by Mazzalve Primary School (481.8 kg), A. Upītis Skrīveri Secondary School (170.4 kg), I. Gaišs Koknese Secondary School (126 kg), and others. The most active collector of small electronics was the “Saulīte” preschool in Aizkraukle, which gathered 18 kg.
Across Latvia, more than 440 educational institutions participated in the campaign this school year. In total, 44.8 tonnes of batteries and 7.5 tonnes of small electronics were collected and sent for safe recycling. Ieva Erta, environmental education expert at “Zaļā josta”, said: “Children’s involvement is one of the most effective ways to build long‑term habits and a responsible attitude towards the environment. We are pleased that the children and young people of Aizkraukle region have made a significant contribution to creating a cleaner Latvia.”
