Latvia's Akmens finishes 13th in 200m at canoe sprint world championship

Latvian kayaker Roberts Akmens finished 13th in the 200m single kayak event at the canoe and kayak sprint world championship taking place in Poznań, Poland, on Saturday.

Akmens competed in the B final, which decided placings from sixth to tenth, where he clocked 35.24 seconds and finished fourth in that heat. He trailed the event winner, Canada's Nicholas Matveev, by roughly three-tenths of a second.

Hopes for the A final in the 500m

Akmens is also competing at the championship in the 500m distance in a two-man kayak alongside Aldis Vilde. The pair posted a time of one minute 30.89 seconds in the semifinal, placing fifth and securing a spot in Sunday's B final rather than the more prestigious A final.

Reaching the A final required finishing among the top three of the semifinal, and the Latvian duo fell just short — missing out by 0.99 seconds.

The canoe and kayak sprint world championship in Poznań will conclude on Sunday with the remaining medals of the event being decided.
