Actor Kārlis Arnolds Avots to receive Jelgava Municipality's highest award
The Jelgava Municipality council has awarded actor Kārlis Arnolds Avots its top honour, the Certificate of Honour, for his contribution to Latvian theatre and film and to promoting the area. He will be honoured on 17 November in Eleja.

The council of Jelgava Municipality in Latvia decided on Wednesday to give actor Kārlis Arnolds Avots the local authority's highest award, the "Goda diploms" (Certificate of Honour). The decision recognises his contribution to Latvian theatre and film, as well as to promoting Jelgava Municipality.
The municipality highlights Avots's professional achievements and his role in raising Latvia's profile internationally. This year has been especially significant in his career: the feature film "Uļa", directed by Viesturs Kairišs, had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Avots came up with the idea for the film and is one of its screenwriters. It tells of the youth of Uļjana Semjonova, the legendary Latvian basketball player, and has been chosen as Latvia's candidate for the prestigious Oscar award.
Other recipients
This year the municipality's highest award will also go to Jānis and Asnāte Avotnieki, owners of the Abgunste manor, for preserving cultural and historical heritage and developing the local community. Eva Fišere, head of Vircava Primary School, is honoured for her contribution to education.
The award and ceremony
Recipients will receive a gilded ear-of-grain pin and a cash prize of 700 euros before tax. Avots is due to be honoured on 17 November at 8 p.m. at the Eleja exhibition hall, at an event dedicated to Latvia's national holidays.
