Activist Plans to Collect Signatures to Dissolve Jelgava County Council; Reason Unclear
Political activist Raimonds Lejnieks-Puķe plans to collect signatures to initiate a referendum to dissolve the Jelgava County Council, but he has not disclosed the reason. It may be linked to his previous legal disputes with the municipality.
Last week, it became known that political activist Raimonds Lejnieks-Puķe intends to collect signatures to call a referendum on dissolving the Jelgava County Council. However, Lejnieks-Puķe has not publicly explained why he believes the council should be dissolved.
Lejnieks-Puķe has several ongoing lawsuits against the Jelgava County municipality. In the summer of 2021, municipal police officers found him lying on the roadway in the bus station area. He was heavily intoxicated (2.64 per mille) and unable to move, so he was taken to a medical detoxification center. Almost a year later, he filed a lawsuit demanding €2,500 in moral damages from the municipality, claiming that police officers had not allowed him to take medication the following morning. The Administrative District Court dismissed his application in full, and he did not appeal the decision.
In 2024, Lejnieks-Puķe filed another application against the Jelgava County municipality, seeking €1,000 for non-material damage and a public apology from the Social Service in the publication "Jelgavas Novada Ziņas". This case has not yet been heard. It is possible that these legal proceedings are related to his motivation to call for the council's dissolution, but the activist has not confirmed this.
