German head coach Jens Wissing (also transliterated as Vissing or Vesseng in some reports) recalled Algerian midfielder Houssem Aouar to the starting line-up after he sat out Al-Ittihad's previous match, a 3-1 league win over Al-Faisaly, due to muscle fatigue. According to comments reported by Saudi newspaper Asharq Al-Awsat, Wissing confirmed Aouar is fit to play. Aouar has made eight appearances for the club across all competitions this season, scoring twice and providing one assist.

In the confirmed line-up, Aouar partners Senegal's Dion Lopy and Colombia's Richard Rios in midfield. The notable surprise came in attack, where Nigerian forward George Ilenikhena — despite strong recent form — was left out of the starting XI, leaving Morocco's Youssef En-Nesyri as the lone striker, flanked by Ahmed Al-Ghamdi and Dutch winger Steven Bergwijn.

Wissing also pointed to a heavy fixture schedule, noting the squad had played 10 matches in 32 days, and said facing Al-Shamal at the climate-controlled Al Bayt Stadium would be his first experience managing in such a venue.
