Al Qaeda-linked JNIM steps up incursions into northern Benin
The al Qaeda-affiliated group JNIM has been intensifying its presence in northern Benin since 2022, using the country as a transit route between its strongholds in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso. Four Beninese soldiers were killed in a border-area attack in May.
Benin, a West African nation, is increasingly becoming a zone of activity for JNIM (Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims), a jihadist group affiliated with al Qaeda. According to analysts, the group has stepped up its operations in Benin since 2022, using the country's north as a transit corridor between its established areas of operation in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso.
Attack follows presidential inauguration
On May 25, 2026, shortly after the inauguration of Benin's new president, Romuald Wadagni, JNIM fighters attacked two army bases in the Kourou Koualou area near the border with Burkina Faso, more than 700 kilometres north of the economic capital, Cotonou. Four Beninese soldiers were killed in the assault. According to RFI, the attack was carried out by several hundred armed men travelling on motorcycles.
Nature reserves used as logistical hubs
Franklin Nossiter, an analyst at the International Crisis Group, said two nature reserves in northern Benin have become logistical hubs for the jihadist fighters. He explained that northern Benin sits next to key JNIM fronts in eastern Burkina Faso, western Niger and an emerging front in Nigeria, allowing the group to move more easily between these areas. He added that the region is also significant for trafficking, which JNIM has exploited to access other smuggling networks and obtain supplies.
Benin's army continues efforts to hold its ground in the north, but the growing jihadist activity suggests that the security threat long associated with the Sahel is gradually spreading into countries previously less affected by the unrest.
