Alan Jones trial: former broadcaster returns to Sydney court for second day

The trial of Alan Jones, the 85-year-old former radio broadcaster, entered its second day at the Downing Centre local court in Sydney on Tuesday. Jones is facing 22 charges of indecent assault involving six complainants. The hearing, presided over by Judge Glenn Walsh, is expected to last four months and hear from 76 witnesses.

The complainant referred to as J is continuing his evidence via video link. On Monday, the former schoolboy athlete said he had not told anyone about the alleged abuse – which included kissing and touching of his genitals – because he was afraid of losing Jones's financial support. J is the first of six alleged victims to testify.

Jones has denied all wrongdoing, describing the allegations as baseless or distorted. His defence barrister, Gabrielle Bashir SC, argued on Monday that the alleged victims were encouraged to make complaints by media rivals, raising questions about their reliability and credibility.

Outside the courtroom, Jones was surrounded by a large press pack, but inside court 3.1 he was referred to simply as "the defendant". The trial relates to allegations dating from when J was a teenager.
