On Thursday, July 2, 2026, violent clashes broke out between protesters and police near the parliament in Tirana, Albania. The protests are against a large resort project associated with the family of US President Donald Trump. The demonstrations began in late May.
Protesters oppose the $4.6 billion hotel, planned for a protected area on the Adriatic coast. They argue the project poses environmental risks to a nearby lagoon that is critical for migratory birds, including hundreds of flamingos. The opposition is also fueled by dissatisfaction with corruption and calls for Prime Minister Edi Rama to resign.
This week, protests at the parliament have occurred twice. On Thursday, special police forces arrived at the scene, leading to clashes. Police used tear gas, pepper spray, and water cannons to disperse the crowd. Some protesters attempted to break through police lines.
Police reported nine officers injured but did not disclose the number of arrests. Local media say around 20 people were detained. One police car parked near the demonstration had its windows smashed.
On Tuesday, protesters threw eggs at police cars, resulting in six arrests. This violence contrasts sharply with the mostly peaceful daily protests in Tirana that have drawn thousands of participants.
