For the first time in his nearly 13 years as prime minister, Edi Rama is facing serious pressure. For over a month, thousands of Albanians have been protesting daily, demanding his resignation over alleged cronyism and corruption. They accuse the government of prioritizing staying in power over citizens' interests.

In an interview with DW, Rama remained unfazed, calling the protests "a wonderful example of freedom and democracy in action." He noted that such protests were impossible during the communist dictatorship and reflect Albania's progress.

The demonstrations, nicknamed the "flamingo revolution," began after a previously public stretch of the Adriatic coast in Vjose-Narta was fenced off. The area is home to flamingos, monk seals, and millions of migratory birds. Plans include luxury resorts by Jared Kushner, US President Donald Trump's son-in-law, through his investment firm Affinity Partners. The project is expected to exceed €4 billion.

Rama defended the project as essential for foreign investment and tourism, which now accounts for about a quarter of Albania's GDP. He denied privatization of public space, calling the accusation "a lie." Critics point to a February 2024 amendment to a law on protected areas that allows "strategic investments" inside nature reserves, which the European Commission warned has degraded conservation.

Rama argued that the amendment does not breach EU standards and will be reviewed during EU accession talks. He believes much international criticism stems from opposition to Trump, not genuine environmental concern. "Albania has become a stage for anti-Trump forces," he said. Despite this, he stressed the importance of listening to domestic protesters, who come from all walks of life.
