Alberta Street and part of Antonijas Street to become pedestrian zones on six weekends
From August 14 to September 20, Alberta Street and a section of Antonijas Street between Dzirnavu and Elizabetes streets will be closed to traffic on six weekends, turning into pedestrian-only zones, Riga's municipality has announced.
Riga's municipality has announced that traffic restrictions will be introduced on Alberta Street and on the section of Antonijas Street between Dzirnavu and Elizabetes streets during six weekends from August 14 to September 20.
During this period, the streets will temporarily become pedestrian zones, with car traffic prohibited. According to the municipality, this will allow both Riga residents and visitors to freely admire the area's Art Nouveau architecture, which is considered one of the city's most distinctive symbols.
Summer atmosphere in the city centre
Creating pedestrian zones on weekends in late summer and early autumn will also offer a chance to enjoy the summery mood at the outdoor cafe terraces located along these streets. The municipality emphasizes that the aim is to encourage leisurely walks and pleasant time spent in the urban environment without disrupting car traffic flow.
The restrictions will apply only on weekends over the six-week period, while on weekdays traffic on both streets will continue as usual.
