Latvia's child support debt to the state Guarantee Fund has grown to €590 million since 2004, with every tenth child supported by the state instead of a parent.

Child support debt continues to rise
In Latvia, the number of child support debtors has reached approximately 42,000 people, and the total debt to the state, since the Guarantee Fund for maintenance was established in 2004, has grown to €590 million. This situation reveals serious systemic problems – every tenth child in Latvia is supported by the state instead of one of the parents.
Experts on the problem and solutions
In the Latvian Radio program "Ģimenes studija" (Family Studio), experts noted that there is no single optimal mechanism for collecting child support arrears. However, debtors can contact the fund and arrange voluntary repayment of the debt.
