A bear has attacked a 15-year-old boy in the Altai Mountains region of Russia, leaving him with serious head injuries. The incident was reported by the Russian news channel Baza. The attack took place 20 kilometres from Solton.

Injuries and treatment

According to Baza, the bear tore away part of the boy's scalp. Despite the severe head trauma, the teenager managed to escape the animal. He was later taken to a hospital in Biysk, where his condition is described as moderately serious.

Why bears come close to people

Baza had previously reported that in Russia there is practically no one willing to kill so-called man-eating bears. Hunters reportedly lose more than they gain from such hunts.

The law adds another restriction. Shooting bears near populated areas is prohibited, and it is allowed only if the animal has already attacked someone.

Hunters believe the situation will get worse in winter. In their assessment, hungry bears regularly look for food close to people, so the risk of encounters may rise.

The source does not say in what circumstances the boy met the bear, how he got away, or whether the animal was found after the attack.
