On Wednesday, 26 August, a new disaster management centre was officially opened in Alūksne. The building will house several operational emergency services together with other institutions of the interior affairs system, allowing for closer coordination of their work.

Significance for the border region

The centre's creation is described as particularly important because of Alūksne's location in Latvia's eastern border region. Bringing operational services together in one place is framed as part of efforts to strengthen the state's ability to respond to emergencies and potential threats near the country's eastern frontier.

The opening of the new centre is also viewed as a signal of continued development in border areas and of reinforcing the state's presence where it is considered especially important.
