Āte Museum in Alūksne showcases old rural crafts, from threshing to woodturning
The Viktors Kirpa Āte Museum in the Alūksne region held its 40th Harvest Festival over the weekend, letting visitors observe and try out traditional rural crafts. Organisers stressed the growing importance of finding people who can pass these skills on to future generations.
Over the past weekend, the Viktors Kirpa Āte Museum in the Alūksne region hosted its Harvest Festival for the 40th time.
Visitors had the chance to learn about a range of old rural crafts and skills that were once part of everyday farmstead life. The programme included grain threshing, flax processing, woodturning and several other traditional trades.
Attendees could not only watch craftsmen demonstrate their skills but also try their own hand at some of the tasks, such as threshing grain or other work typical of rural life in the past.
Passing knowledge to the next generation
Organisers emphasised that it is becoming increasingly important to find people who still know these old crafts and are willing to pass their knowledge on, so that traditional skills are not lost and can be preserved for future generations.
