Amazon cargo plane crashes at Miami International Airport
An Amazon-branded Boeing 767-300 cargo jet ran off the runway during landing at Miami International Airport on Sunday, struck vehicles and left multiple people injured. Air traffic was halted for a time, with more than 60 fire-rescue units responding to the scene.
An Amazon-branded cargo jet went off the runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon, colliding with vehicles and causing a number of injuries, according to officials. The extent of the damage and the severity of the injuries were not immediately clear.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the plane, operated by 21 Air as Flight 7598, landed around 2 p.m. local time after flying from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Boeing 767-300 overran the landing strip and came to rest on the other side of a road bordering the airport.
Emergency crews responded quickly. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue deployed more than 60 units to the location, and when firefighters arrived the aircraft was on fire with thick smoke rising from it. Video from the scene posted by NBC 6 showed the Amazon logo on the plane’s tail and heavy smoke clouding the area. All flights at the airport were temporarily grounded because of the incident.
Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel confirmed that an Amazon Air plane operated by 21 Air was involved in the attempted landing. She said the situation was developing, that the company was still gathering details and cooperating closely with local authorities. Amazon’s top priority, she said, was the safety and well-being of everyone affected, and the company was doing all it could to support those involved.
