Woman Removes Carpet in Old House, Discovers Original Hardwood Floors

Renovations in old houses can sometimes bring unexpected surprises. A woman in North Carolina, who bought and is gradually restoring an older home, was stunned to find that beneath the worn green carpet in her living room lay a beautiful original hardwood floor.
Alexa Engberg, a resident of Wilmington, shared her discovery on social media. In a TikTok video, she showed the removed carpet piled in the middle of the room and the spacious area with natural wooden flooring. The video caption read: "Bought an old house and removed the carpets to find perfect original hardwood floors." The homeowner later admitted that finding the hidden floors was a dream come true.
For those living in older homes who want to know what lies beneath their carpet, experts suggest not ripping up the entire covering at once. Start by carefully lifting a small section in an inconspicuous spot, such as near a wall, in a closet, or under furniture. Another option is to look through a vent opening. If you see solid wood planks about 2 centimeters or more in thickness, they may be the original hardwood floor.
Before restoring, it's important to assess the condition of the boards. Real wood has a natural, consistent grain pattern, unlike artificial materials like veneer or MDF, which show distinct layers. Also check for signs of moisture, dark spots, mold, or rot damage.
