Amnesty International: Russia deceives foreigners into fighting Ukraine war
Human rights group Amnesty International has found that Russia uses deceptive job schemes to force foreign nationals into fighting against Ukraine. Young men from poorer countries are most often the victims.
The international non-governmental organization Amnesty International has concluded, following its own investigation, that Russia is systematically deceiving foreign nationals into taking part in the war against Ukraine.
How the scheme works
According to the investigation, the most common victims are young men from lower-income countries around the world. They are lured in with job advertisements in Russia that appear attractive and lucrative.
However, once they arrive on Russian territory, the situation changes abruptly. The men are pressured into signing documents whose contents they cannot understand, likely due to language barriers or misleading information. After signing, they are sent directly to the front line to fight on Russia's side against Ukraine.
Vulnerable groups targeted
The Amnesty International investigation indicates that this scheme primarily targets economically vulnerable people, for whom a job offer abroad may seem like a chance to improve their own and their family's financial situation. This uncertainty and economic need makes them particularly susceptible to deceptive promises.
