Tens of thousands join climate march in Amsterdam

Tens of thousands of people gathered in Amsterdam on Saturday for a climate march that ran from Dam Square to Museum Square, covering roughly 2.5 kilometers, aiming to draw attention to climate-related concerns.

According to organizers, around 40,000 people took part in the event. Police and city authorities have not confirmed an official participant count.

Demands and symbols

Participants called on the Netherlands to stop using fossil fuels and urged an accelerated shift toward clean energy sources. Many carried banners and placards with slogans opposing oil and fossil fuel use. Palestinian flags and symbols of the Extinction Rebellion movement were also visible among the crowd.

The march was organized by the so-called "Coalition Against the Climate Crisis," which brings together various environmental and civic organizations, including Milieudefensie and Extinction Rebellion.

An annual event

In recent years, the climate movement has increasingly organized such marches in Amsterdam, typically in autumn. The largest turnout came in 2023, when organizers estimated around 85,000 participants.

On the same day, protests against right-wing extremists took place in neighboring Germany. This followed the Alternative for Germany party's historic win in the Saxony-Anhalt state election on September 6, though it fell short of an absolute majority.
