Anbernic unveils RG DDS, a dual-screen handheld suited to 3DS games
Handheld console maker Anbernic has revealed the RG DDS, a dual-screen clamshell device powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 chip. Pricing and a release date have not been announced.
Anbernic, a maker of handheld gaming consoles, has revealed a new clamshell device with two screens, the RG DDS. The name stands for "Dream Dual-Screen" and is an evident nod to the Nintendo 3DS. It follows the RG DS, the company's take on the Nintendo DS, which was teased about a year ago. Pricing and a release date have not yet been disclosed.
Screens and chip
The RG DDS has a 4.7-inch main display with a 1,200 x 720 resolution and a 5:3 aspect ratio. The secondary screen measures 4 inches, with a 960 x 720 resolution and a 4:3 ratio. Because these ratios match the 3DS, Engadget suggests that most users will likely use the device to replay 3DS games.
The handheld runs on Qualcomm's Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 chip, which should be enough to emulate games from systems as demanding as the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 2. Apart from a 6,000mAh battery, other specifications have not been revealed.
Controls and extras
The controls nearly mirror those of Nintendo's handheld, but Anbernic added a second analog stick on the right side. The console also has an extendable capacitive stylus that can be tucked away when not in use. The company mentioned a dedicated AI button as well, without specifying which features it triggers.
Pricing expectations
Engadget expects the RG DDS to cost somewhat more than its $99 predecessor. Anbernic is known for affordable products, though, so the device could potentially undercut the recently released Retroid Pocket Duo and its Lite version, which starts at $149.
