Anbernic has announced that its latest handheld console, the RG SP, will be available for pre-order starting August 5 at 6 AM ET / 3 AM PT. The device is a modern reimagining of the original Game Boy Advance SP, and its price is set to be lower than that of Nintendo's clamshell handheld when it launched in 2003.

The company first teased the RG SP a few weeks ago without revealing the price or release date. Now it's confirmed that the base model will retail for $65, though early bird pricing could reduce that amount. The RG SP marks Anbernic's third attempt at recreating the iconic GBA SP, following the RG 35XXSP and the RG 34XXSP.

The new console features a 3.4-inch display that matches the GBA SP's aspect ratio, along with a 3,300mAh battery rated for about six hours of gameplay. Unlike the RG 34XXSP, this version omits analog sticks. Powered by the H700 chip, the RG SP should handle emulation up to PSP titles.

In addition to the base model, Anbernic will offer upgraded variants with 64GB of extra storage for $80 and 128GB for $95. A $7 discount is available for anyone who purchases the RG SP within the first three days of its release.
