Andris Nelsons and Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra to Perform in Liepāja as Part of European Capital of Culture 2027

On May 26, 2027, the Liepāja Concert Hall Great Amber will host the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and conductor Andris Nelsons, featuring Beethoven's Sixth and Seventh symphonies, as part of the 'Liepāja – European Capital of Culture 2027' program.

The Liepāja Concert Hall Great Amber and the Andrejs Žagars Cultural Development Foundation will present the legendary Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and its artistic director, Maestro Andris Nelsons, in concert on May 26, 2027. This event is part of the “Liepāja – European Capital of Culture 2027” program.

The Gewandhaus Orchestra, founded in 1743, is the world's oldest civic symphony orchestra. Since 2018, Andris Nelsons has served as its artistic director and chief conductor, ushering in a new era. His emotional, flowing energy merges with the orchestra's centuries-old traditions. Together, they have performed on the world's largest stages, undertaken outstanding international tours, and released critically acclaimed recordings. Their collaboration has been extended through 2032.

The concert program features two distinct Beethoven symphonies: the Sixth (“Pastoral”) and the Seventh. The Sixth evokes nature, while the Seventh combines deep drama with ultimate bliss, commemorating the 200th anniversary of Beethoven's death.

Arturs Maskats, board member of the Andrejs Žagars Cultural Development Foundation, noted that this will be the orchestra's second visit to Liepāja, following their 2018 performance. Orests Silabriedis, artistic director of the Great Amber concert hall, highlighted the orchestra's motto “Res severa verum gaudium” (True joy is a serious matter) as fitting for the program.

Tickets go on sale June 11 at 12:00 PM at all “Biļešu Paradīze” outlets, online at www.bilesuparadize.lv, and at the concert hall's information center. The concert is organized by SIA “Lielais Dzintars” and the Andrejs Žagars Cultural Development Foundation, with financing from Liepāja State City, South Kurzeme and Kuldīga municipalities, the Ministry of Culture, and the State Culture Capital Foundation.
