Andževs, who debuted for Latvia's national team, joins basketball club "Latvijas Universitāte"
Basketball player Adrians Andževs will play for club "Latvijas Universitāte" next season under a one-year deal. The player, who made his national team debut last season, is still recovering from shoulder surgery.
Nineteen-year-old point guard Adrians Andževs will join Latvian basketball club "Latvijas Universitāte" (LU) for the upcoming season. The club announced the one-year agreement on Tuesday.
Last season Andževs played for "VEF Rīga," averaging 5.9 points and 2.4 assists across 24 games in the Latvian-Estonian Basketball League. In five FIBA Champions League games he averaged 5.5 points and 1.7 assists. That same season he made his debut for Latvia's senior national team, scoring six points and adding two assists in a World Cup qualifying match against Austria.
Recovering from surgery
During the off-season Andževs underwent shoulder surgery and is still in recovery. His return to the court and debut for LU are expected within the coming months.
LU sports director Žanis Peiners said discussions with the player and his representatives produced a shared understanding that Andževs currently needs to fully recover from his injury, secure a meaningful role on the team, and get sufficient playing time to continue developing. Peiners said the club can currently offer exactly that kind of platform, and that the player's choice reflects a deliberate, long-term approach to his career.
Andževs trained at the Gulbene Municipality Children's and Youth Sports School and has also played for the academy of Spanish club Real Madrid, with whom he won the youth EuroLeague championship in 2024.
