England extend their lead over Pakistan on day two of the Edgbaston Test

Day one: Pakistan bowled out cheaply

On the first day of the third Test at Edgbaston, England's bowlers dismissed Pakistan for 133. Batting first in reply, England ended the day with a 23-run lead already established.

Day two: Lawrence and Brook build a partnership

In the day two morning session, batters Dan Lawrence and Harry Brook carried on where they left off, dominating Pakistan's bowling attack. Lawrence brought up his seventh Test fifty (his third since being recalled to the side) — the BBC puts it at 48 balls, while the Guardian reports he reached fifty in just 47 balls. Brook, meanwhile, was closing in on his maiden Test century, batting fluently and running hard between the wickets despite hitting relatively few boundaries.

According to the BBC, England added 65 runs in nine overs during the morning session, pushing their overall lead beyond 80 runs.

Brook run out, Smith injured

As reported by the Guardian, Brook was dismissed for 75 while attempting a quick single — Pakistan's Saim Ayub collected a sharp throw from Shan Masood and broke the stumps. Brook visibly showed his frustration, having let slip the chance of a first Test hundred.

He was replaced by Jamie Smith, who, according to both sources, is carrying an injury to his right thumb/finger and batted with it strapped in a splint. Pakistan's Mohammad Ali troubled Smith on several occasions, including an LBW appeal that umpire Paul Reiffel turned down for height, with Pakistan choosing not to review the decision.

Current state of play

After 53 overs, England's score stood at 234 for 5 (Lawrence 54, Smith 2), with their lead over Pakistan now above 100 runs. England already lead the series 2-0 and, based on the pace of their innings, appear to be building towards a substantial total that would leave Pakistan a stiff target across the final two sessions of the match.
