UN: May Becomes Deadliest Month for Civilians in Ukraine Since 2022
A UN official reported that in May 2026, at least 274 civilians were killed and 1,763 wounded in Ukraine due to Russian airstrikes – the highest monthly toll since April 2022.

Mohammed Khaled Khiari, UN Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific, stated that May 2026 recorded the highest number of civilian casualties in Ukraine since April 2022. Speaking at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, he cited data from the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
According to Khiari, at least 274 civilians were killed and 1,763 wounded in May. Since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, the UN has confirmed 16,126 civilian deaths, including 796 children. A total of 46,590 civilians have been wounded, among them 2,835 children. Khiari noted that the actual figures are likely significantly higher.
The official called for immediate de-escalation and a renewal of diplomatic efforts to achieve an unconditional ceasefire and a just and lasting peace in line with the UN Charter.
The Security Council convened on June 22 at Ukraine's request. The meeting was prompted by Russia's massive strike on the night of June 15, which damaged the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. A drone hit the Assumption Cathedral, causing a fire that destroyed over 80% of the roof. Overall, 19 cultural heritage objects on the monastery grounds were damaged.
