U.N. Acknowledges World Will Overshoot 1.5-Degree Climate Target

The United Nations has acknowledged that the world will not manage to keep global warming within the long-standing 1.5-degree-Celsius target measured against pre-industrial levels. This marks a significant shift in international climate policy, since that threshold has long served as the central benchmark nations sought to avoid crossing.

A New Approach

Rather than continuing to focus solely on preventing the target from being missed, the U.N. has proposed a different framework — limiting the so-called "overshoot," meaning how far and for how long global temperatures exceed the agreed limit. Alongside this, the goal now includes eventually finding ways to bring temperatures back down closer to the original target after the overshoot occurs.

Deep Uncertainty Ahead

The U.N. itself has acknowledged that this path — reversing temperature increases after they have already occurred — is highly uncertain. It remains unclear what specific measures could achieve such a reversal, how quickly it could realistically be done, or whether it is achievable at all given current technology and the level of political will among nations.

This change in framing suggests that the international community is beginning to prepare for a scenario in which climate action no longer centers on staying within a strict limit, but instead on managing and eventually correcting an overshoot that has already taken place, over an extended period of time.
