Anthropic, the artificial intelligence company behind the Claude chatbot, saw its revenue grow by 45% to $16.8bn (£12.7bn) in the three months to the end of September, the BBC understands. The company shared the figures with prospective investors on Wednesday at its headquarters in San Francisco, as it prepares for a stock market listing expected before the end of the year. The numbers matter because they offer a gauge of how fast the AI industry is growing and whether it can pay for the infrastructure needed to develop the technology.

Revenue rising quarter after quarter

Anthropic's revenue has increased in each quarter this year, from $4.7bn in the first three months to $11.6bn in the following period. The company also reportedly said it made a profit for the second quarter running. An Anthropic spokesperson declined to comment.

Revenue figures from Anthropic and rival OpenAI are seen as an important indicator of the sector's growth.

Tech shares under pressure

The news comes as some technology stocks have fallen in recent days amid concern over the hundreds of billions of dollars being spent on AI infrastructure, including the chips and other hardware that power data centres. On Wednesday, shares in US chip makers including AMD, Nvidia and Intel fell sharply.

In Asia on Thursday morning, shares in Japanese tech investment firm Softbank dropped by more than 9%. South Korean semiconductor giants also declined, with Samsung down 9.4% and SK Hynix down 10.8%. Tech-heavy indexes in the region fell too. Trading on South Korea's Kospi and Kosdaq was temporarily halted after drops of more than 8%, while Japan's Nikkei 225 lost over 5%.
