Anthropic signs $45 billion compute deal with Nscale

Anthropic has signed a deal to rent roughly $45 billion worth of AI computing capacity from Nscale, a British AI infrastructure company, according to a source familiar with the matter who spoke to TechCrunch. The deal was first reported by Bloomberg.

Nscale, founded only in 2024, has already struck partnerships with companies including Microsoft. Under the new agreement, Nscale will supply Anthropic with compute powered by Nvidia's newest Vera Rubin chip system, which combines six different chips and is regarded as the current cutting edge of chip design. The added capacity is expected to begin supporting Anthropic's services in late 2027.

According to Bloomberg, the agreement runs for six years, with the computing power sourced from Nscale's flagship data center in West Virginia.

Part of a broader compute buying spree

Over the past eight months, Anthropic has been rapidly expanding its computing capacity as it works to compete more effectively with rivals, particularly OpenAI. Earlier this month, the company signed a $10 billion deal with cloud startup Volta, founded in January of this year, securing six years of computing supply from a data center in Norway. In July, Anthropic also signed a $5 billion deal with chipmaker AMD.

In May, the company disclosed a large computing arrangement with Elon Musk's SpaceX, drawing capacity from two SpaceX data centers and reportedly delivering about $1.25 billion worth of capacity to Anthropic each month. In April, Anthropic expanded its partnership with Amazon, gaining access to an additional 5 gigawatts of power, and also broadened its relationships with Google and Broadcom.

Anthropic is not alone in its pursuit of ever-greater compute resources — competitors including Google, OpenAI and Meta are pursuing similar strategies.
