Anthropic Report Details Widespread Misuse of Claude AI in Hacking and Bioweapon Attempts
Anthropic has published an eight-month overview showing its Claude AI tool was exploited for state-sponsored hacking, disinformation campaigns, and attempted bioweapon development, though the company says it disrupted each case.

AI company Anthropic this week released a comprehensive report detailing how its Claude AI tool has been misused across multiple domains worldwide over the past eight months, documenting a series of case studies involving criminal and dangerous applications.
State-Sponsored Attacks and Cybercrime
In one case, Russian state-sponsored hackers identified by Microsoft as Midnight Blizzard used Claude for reconnaissance, breaching networks belonging to Ukrainian and other European governments, stealing data and maintaining persistent access. Separately, the cybercriminal group ShinyHunters used Claude at nearly every stage of its hacking and extortion operations.
Disinformation and Bioweapons
The report also describes disinformation and influence campaigns targeting political processes in countries including Kenya and Bangladesh. Among the most concerning findings were cases in which users appeared to attempt developing potential bioweapons, including disease pathogens and toxins, with the help of the tool.
Anthropic states that it disrupted the malicious activity in every documented instance. However, the company acknowledges there is no guarantee it has identified every misuse of its AI, and when accounting for competing AI services and less-regulated open-source tools, the findings point to a broader pattern of security risks across the AI industry.
