Apple AirPods 5 Review: Noise Cancelling Improved, but Pro Models Still Ahead
Wired's review finds Apple's new AirPods 5 earbuds notably improved, thanks to noise cancellation in both versions. The reviewer still prefers the AirPods Pro 3 with silicone tips.

Technology site Wired has published a review of Apple's AirPods 5 wireless earbuds, which come in two versions. The main upgrade is active noise cancellation (ANC) in both models, so buyers no longer have to pay extra for the feature. The cheaper version costs $129, and the reviewer considers it a better deal than the standard AirPods 4 were when they launched.
Noise cancellation
Apple says the new earbuds remove up to 50 percent more external noise than the AirPods 4 with ANC, thanks to a redesigned multi-port acoustic architecture and improved audio processing. The reviewer could not verify that figure but noticed the improvement during testing.
The earbuds performed particularly well on a domestic flight, suppressing airplane engine noise effectively, though the cabin sounds did not disappear entirely. The AirPods Pro 3 still provide stronger isolation.
Transparency mode and other features
Transparency mode, which lets in outside sound, now sounds more natural. Combined with Adaptive Audio, which automatically balances noise cancellation and Transparency mode based on surroundings, it proved useful on a run: when footsteps approached from behind, the earbuds lowered the music and let in more environmental sound. Both versions also support Conversation Awareness, Live Translation, Spatial Audio and Siri features.
The open-ear trade-off
For people who run outdoors or commute, the semi-open design can be more appealing than the tighter seal of the Pro models, as it gives a more natural sense of the surroundings. Still, the reviewer personally prefers the AirPods Pro 3: they create a snug seal without making the ears feel clogged, and interchangeable sizes allow the fit to be tailored. On longer runs the AirPods 5 began slipping as sweat built up, while the Pros stayed in place. The more secure fit also naturally improves noise cancellation.
