Black returns to the iPhone Pro color lineup
Apple has brought back a black option for its new iPhone Pro line after skipping it last year, a change welcomed by a longtime black-iPhone buyer at The Verge.
Apple's newly unveiled iPhone 18 Pro lineup once again includes a black color option, restoring a choice that was notably absent from last year's iPhone 17 Pro models.
A shift back from bold colors
When Apple launched the iPhone 17 Pro, it leaned into brighter shades — a bold orange, a shiny silver, and a dark blue — but left out black or dark gray entirely. That marked the first time since the iPhone Pro line debuted in September 2019, with the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro Max, that no black or gray option was offered.
The Verge senior reporter Jay Peters describes the return of black as personally significant, noting he has consistently chosen black phones over the years. He recalls one exception, buying a gold iPhone 6, which he later regretted. Since then he has stuck to black or gray models, including the matte black iPhone 7 and his current black titanium iPhone 16 Pro, which he still uses in a black case.
Store visit planned
Peters says he plans his usual mid-September trip to an Apple Store to check out the new iPhones, but this year he won't bother looking closely at the burgundy, blue, or silver iPhone 18 Pro models — he'll head straight for the black one. He also expressed hope that Apple will eventually offer a black option for a device referred to as the iPhone Duo.
