Apple Readies Wide-Ranging Mac Upgrades Beyond Touchscreens
According to Bloomberg, Apple plans significant updates to MacBook Neo, iMac, MacBook Air, and other models over the next year, including new processors and design changes.
Rumors have been swirling for months about Apple's plans to add an OLED touchscreen to its MacBook Pro, but Bloomberg reports nearly all the company's other laptops and desktops are receiving chip upgrades and, in some cases, design changes within the next year. The highlight is a new MacBook Neo, reportedly using the A19 Pro chip from the iPhone 17 Pro, with more RAM and new colors.
In the near term, Bloomberg writes that Apple has prepared updates to the iMac and entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro for this fall, focusing on chip bumps to the M5 and upcoming M6 chips, respectively. Between fall and early 2027, Apple will introduce the "MacBook Ultra," using M5 Pro and M5 Max chips from current high-end MacBook Pros, but with a new OLED touchscreen and macOS interface tweaks.
For 2027, Apple plans to update the 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air, likely with the M6 chip, and, assuming supply constraints allow, release new Mac Mini and Mac Studio versions. Bloomberg says Apple is testing Mac Mini models with M5 Pro and M6 chips, while the in-development Mac Studio currently uses M5 Max or M5 Ultra chips. A complete redesign of the 14-inch MacBook Pro is still in the works, debuting with an M7 chip.
Beyond immediate upgrades, OLED screens will gradually appear in other products, starting with iPad Mini, then MacBook Pros, the 2028 MacBook Air, and eventually the iMac. M7 Pro and Max chips will debut on 2027 MacBook Pros. Apple only recently raised Mac prices in June 2025, so hopefully some upcoming upgrades won't bring further hikes. However, given high memory demand and a rumored new hardware leasing program, don't be surprised if costs creep higher.
