How Apple's Mac Studio has evolved across four generations

Since its 2022 debut, Apple's Mac Studio has kept the same physical design while its internal power and price have climbed sharply. The latest M5 generation offers up to 512GB of memory alongside notably higher costs.

Apple's Mac Studio has kept an unchanged exterior since launching in 2022 — a 7.7-inch square aluminum block standing 3.7 inches tall. Yet beneath that identical shell, the machine has gone through four distinct generations of silicon, each bringing major changes in capability and cost.

From launch to today

The original Mac Studio arrived in 2022 with M1 Max and M1 Ultra options. The M1 Ultra was created by fusing two M1 Max chips together using Apple's "UltraFusion" interconnect, resulting in 114 billion transistors acting as one processor. The base model started at $1,999, while the Ultra configuration began at $3,999.

In 2023, Apple introduced the M2 generation, with the Ultra variant reaching up to 192GB of memory and 800GB/s of bandwidth. Around the same time, Apple also launched a Mac Pro using the identical M2 Ultra chip and memory ceiling, but priced dramatically higher at $6,999.

March 2025 brought a surprising pairing of two different chip generations — the M4 Max and M3 Ultra — in the same lineup, with memory capacity rising to 512GB. However, an AI-driven memory shortage soon forced Apple to sharply raise prices: the M4 Max model jumped from $1,999 to $2,499, and the M3 Ultra climbed from $3,999 to $5,299. Apple publicly stated it had never witnessed component costs rise so quickly.

The newest generation

In August 2026, Apple unexpectedly released a fourth-generation Mac Studio built around M5 chips, reportedly driven by enterprise demand for more capable machines to run local AI models. For the first time since 2023, both the Max and Ultra variants share the same chip generation. The M5 Ultra offers up to 512GB of memory and is positioned as delivering up to 4.3 times the AI performance of the M3 Ultra. That top configuration is set to arrive in late October, starting at $5,499.
