Apple raises prices across multiple product lines amid memory crisis

Apple has significantly increased prices on Macs, iPads, HomePods, and Vision Pro, citing the global memory shortage. This rare move comes as the company typically does not adjust prices on current models.

Apple today announced price increases across nearly all its product categories, including Macs, iPads, HomePods, and even the Vision Pro. In many cases, prices jumped by several hundred dollars. For example, the MacBook Neo's starting price rose from $599 to $699.

This move is notable because Apple rarely changes prices on existing models during their lifecycle. The company seldom offers discounts and typically maintains consistent pricing until a new model is introduced. However, the global memory chip shortage has forced Apple to rethink its pricing strategy.

The price hike is not surprising given that the memory shortage has already impacted other sectors. Gaming consoles like PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam Deck have all seen price increases. Laptops and smartphones have also suffered: Google's Pixel 10A, a barely updated version of the 9A, managed to keep its previous price, while Samsung's S26 series offers less storage at higher prices.

Apple's move underscores how severe the memory crisis has become, affecting even the biggest players. While iPhones have not yet seen price changes, the next-generation iPhone 18 is expected to be more expensive. Some companies have chosen this year to launch unique, high-end devices, such as a foldable iPhone and the Steam Machine at twice the PS5's price. However, such devices' success may be questionable amid the memory crunch.

This situation, dubbed "RAMageddon," will quickly separate winners from losers in the industry. Even Apple, which traditionally withstands supply chain fluctuations, is now forced to respond to the memory shortage, showing that the crisis affects the entire consumer tech sector.
