Apple Pay vs. Apple Wallet: How the two Apple tools actually differ

Apple Pay and Apple Wallet are often used interchangeably, but they serve distinct roles — one stores information, the other processes payments. A related feature, Apple Cash, handles sending money between users.

Apple Wallet and Apple Pay are frequently confused, but Apple designed them for different purposes. Wallet is an iPhone app, with a companion tool for Apple Watch, that functions as a digital wallet, storing debit and credit cards, auto insurance cards, boarding passes, IDs and similar items. Apple Pay is the payment service that lets users pay with cards stored in Wallet, whether in physical stores or online.

How a payment works

For in-store purchases, users tap their iPhone on an NFC terminal, press the Side button twice, and confirm the transaction with Face ID, Touch ID or a passcode. Online payments work similarly to services like PayPal, where a card is selected and the purchase is authenticated.

Behind the scenes, Apple Pay generates a unique Device Account Number for each card, stored securely on a chip called the Secure Element. During a transaction, this number and a one-time security code are sent to the merchant instead of the actual card number, and Apple's servers don't retain identifying transaction details. This is why authentication is required for every purchase. Users can check the last four digits of a card's Device Account Number within the Wallet app to distinguish Apple Pay purchases from other transactions on the same card.

Apple Cash handles person-to-person transfers

Sending money to others is managed through Apple Cash, a feature linked to Apple Pay. Money can be sent or requested via iMessage or directly from the Apple Cash card in Wallet, by selecting a contact, entering an amount and authenticating. The recipient's phone number must be linked to an Apple Account and eligible for Apple Cash. Received funds can be transferred to a bank, used for recurring payments, or topped up from a debit card. Because Apple Cash only works between Apple devices, sending money to an Android user requires a separate service such as Venmo.

In short, Wallet stores digital payment methods, Apple Pay is the mechanism for paying merchants, and Apple Cash is the way to send money to friends or family.
