Apple Wallet's digital driver's license option keeps expanding across US states

For several years, Apple has allowed iPhone and Apple Watch users to store digital versions of personal identification, including a driver's license, directly on their devices. The feature can speed up processes such as airport security checks or age verification without needing to physically hand over a wallet card.

The digital license is encrypted and stored securely on the device. Apple states that neither the company nor the issuing authority can see when or where a person uses their digital ID. Before any information is shared with a business or venue scanning the ID, the user can see exactly what data will be revealed — for example, a bartender might only learn that a customer is over 21 and that the photo matches, without seeing other personal details. Sharing only happens after authentication via Touch ID or Face ID.

Setting it up

To add a license, users open the Wallet app, select the option for driver's licenses and ID cards, and choose their state or region. Both sides of the physical license must be scanned in a well-lit setting, followed by a selfie or Live Photo to confirm identity. The process finishes with Touch ID, Face ID, or a passcode for those using accessibility features. The relevant issuing authority must approve the digital license before it becomes usable, and it can only exist on one device at a time.

Where it works

Outside of Japan, where a similar system operates through My Number Cards, the feature is currently limited to the United States. It is available in more than a dozen states and territories, including Arizona, California, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. North Carolina's motor vehicle department plans to add support for Apple, Google, and Samsung digital wallets starting in early 2027, and Utah is reportedly expected to join the program soon as well.
