Apple reportedly developing AI server built on M-series Ultra chips
Apple is said to be building an enterprise AI server powered by M-series Ultra chips, potentially launching in 2029 as its first server product in nearly two decades.
Apple is reportedly developing a new AI server built around its high-performance M-series Ultra chips, the same processors used in its Mac desktop computers, according to a report from The Information. Should the project reach the market, it is expected to launch in 2029, marking Apple's first server product in close to twenty years.
Two planned configurations
The enterprise server is said to be planned in two configurations, featuring either two or four of Apple's future M8 Ultra chips. The project reportedly gained backing from Apple's new CEO John Ternus about a year ago, at a time when Ternus was still leading the company's hardware engineering division.
Rising demand from AI developers
The report comes as sales of Apple's Mac mini and Mac Studio computers have been booming, driven by AI developers and companies purchasing the machines to handle AI workloads. This growing popularity of devices powered by M-series Ultra chips appears to have encouraged Apple's move toward building an enterprise server using the same chip family.
According to The Information, AI firms including OpenAI have purchased tens of thousands of Mac mini and Mac Studio units to train AI agents through trial-and-error reinforcement learning. Anthropic, meanwhile, has reportedly rented Mac mini machines through Amazon Web Services.
