Survey: 71% of young people in Latvia agree women have to prove their competence more often

According to a spring survey by research agency "Norstat" commissioned by "Evolution Latvia", a majority of young people in Latvia (71%) believe that women have to prove their competence more often than men. Some 82% of women and 43% of men agree with this statement, while 36% of men and 12% of women disagree.

Regarding equal opportunities in Latvia, 36% of respondents agreed that men and women have equal opportunities, 36% disagreed, and 25% were neutral. Men were more likely than women to fully agree that equal opportunities exist in the labor market.

The survey found that 44% of women and 15% of men have experienced differential treatment at work or in studies due to their gender. Overall, 82% of young people think women have realistic chances to hold leadership positions. However, there is a gender gap: 47% of men consider these chances very realistic, compared to only 19% of women.

As for the development of gender equality in the next five years, 12% of youth expect improvement, 45% think it will rather improve, and 29% believe it will stay the same.

Most surveyed young people support targeted measures to promote gender equality. The most popular measures include educational activities in the workplace, flexible working conditions, and ensuring work-life balance.

The survey involved 331 young people aged 16-30, including students, graduates, and future students.
