Survey: 93% of parents believe children should be told about safety online and in relationships
An SKDS survey shows most Latvian parents recognize the need to talk to children about safety, but only about half have actually discussed avoiding sexual abuse with their children.
A survey conducted by research center SKDS shows that more than 90% of parents — specifically 93% — believe it is necessary to talk to children about safety in relationships and online. The findings were reported by the organization "Centrs Dardedze," citing the survey, according to information provided to the LETA news agency.
A gap between belief and action
While the belief in the importance of such conversations is widespread among nearly all surveyed parents, actual behavior lags behind this recognized necessity. The survey data shows that only half of parents of children aged five to 11 have actually talked with their children about avoiding sexual abuse.
This gap between parents' stated conviction about the importance of such conversations and their actual practice points to a shortfall that may leave some children without the information and skills needed to recognize and avoid risks, both online and in personal relationships.
"Centrs Dardedze" is using the survey results to draw public attention to the need for parents to engage more actively in discussing these topics with their children, rather than relying solely on a general belief that it is important.
