A Financial Times poll published days before the US midterm elections on 3 November suggests corruption has become the main source of public discontent in the United States. About 69% of registered voters said they are "very" or "somewhat" concerned about corruption, abuse of office or conflicts of interest in the administration of President Donald Trump. Midterms are held halfway through a presidential term and decide the makeup of Congress.

Key findings

Nearly 50% of those who voted for Trump in 2024 expressed the same concern. Almost half of all registered voters said corruption has become a bigger problem during Trump's second term than under previous administrations.

About 54% of respondents believe that either the Trump administration or congressional Republicans bear the greatest responsibility for the rising prices Americans currently face. More worrying for Republicans, over 40% said higher prices have made them more likely to vote for Democrats in the midterms.

Methodology

The online poll was conducted on 16–18 October by Focaldata, an independent research organisation based in London. It reflects the views of 1,648 registered voters and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 percentage points.

Background

A few days ago it was reported that 54% of Americans believe Trump has committed offences that warrant impeachment. His approval rating has fallen to a record low of 31% shortly before the elections. Trump has also said he would pay every American adult a "Trump dividend" of $5,000 if Republicans retain control of Congress in the November midterms.
