In Latvia, 56% of residents plan to spend up to €120 on Christmas gifts this year, according to a survey commissioned by the furniture retailer Ikea. The findings offer a look at how much households are prepared to spend on holiday shopping. The online survey was conducted in September by the research agency Norstat and involved 1,039 Latvian residents.
Gift budgets
Gifts account for the largest share of planned holiday spending. Some 38% of respondents intend to spend up to €90, while 27% plan to spend more than €160. A further 14% are ready to spend more than €200 on gifts.
Budgets differ across the Baltic states: in Lithuania, 27% of residents plan to spend over €200 on gifts, and in Estonia the figure is 22%.
Spending plans also vary by age. People aged 30 to 49 more often choose bigger budgets, with about one in five of them planning to spend more than €200. In the 60 to 74 age group, the share is 9%.
How many people will receive gifts
The survey shows that 7% of Latvian residents do not plan to buy gifts this year. Almost half, or 46%, will buy gifts for one to four people, while 26% intend to give gifts to seven or more people.
Overall holiday spending
Besides presents, holiday preparations include spending on the festive table, decorations and other necessary items. One in two respondents, or 51%, expects total spending to remain at last year's level.
Overall, 64% of residents plan to spend up to €200 on the holidays, and 16% between €201 and €300. Budgets exceeding €300 and €400 are planned by 13% of people in Latvia, compared with 22% in Lithuania and 13% in Estonia.
